Jon replied: "her desert cactus flowers are loose and flowing, when she was working the only paint available was oil, water color and gouache"

Katerina W replied: "O'Keefe's flower paintings have a sensual, almost erotic quality; the quality of the petal surfaces are comparable to skin."

Earth Angel replied: "O'Keeffe is yet another one of those artists who introduced a new way of looking at nature. No one before her had ever attempted the style of examining extreme close ups of a subjetc. She did not start out painting flowers in this matter, that came a bit later in her career. She wanted her viewers to see flowers for the first time, even if they had looked at them all their lives. It was pretty effective to enlarge them and turn the the surface of the canvas into something quite abstract in many regards. Although she painted other subjects her fluid brush strokes, distinctive color palette in the depiction of various types of flowers became her trade mark. There are some enthusiasts of her work who insist that her flowers were representational of female genitalia, but she flatly denied this. It is, however easy to see why that deduction was made in certain paintings. Her materials were oil paint on canvas and in some cases charcoal, which she used for drawings. Later in life she tried her hand at sculpture. One cannot look at any art work without considering the artist as well. O'Keeffe was a singularly independent woman who was first and foremost committed to her work and took full advantage of those who helped her gain recognition. Her husband Alfred Stieglitz, a very famous photographer and many years her senior, probably did more to promote her work and launch her into success, fame and fortune than anyone else. There is lots of info out there about her including several biographies. Oh yes, I do admire her work. Upon reading about her life I am not so sure about her personality."
